Job
: Bus Operator
Years of service: 11

How did you come to work at Metro Transit?

In 2008, I entered the workforce during the Great Recession. After working a bunch of seasonal part-time jobs at big box stores, in customer service or general office work, I wanted a full-time career with benefits. A friend of mine who worked at Metro Transit told me I should apply here. So, I applied to be a bus operator. Shortly thereafter, they announced a hiring freeze. A year later I started as a part-time bus operator.

What do you enjoy the most about being “On the Clock”?

After five years as a train operator I'm back on the bus side and I couldn't be happier. Being a train operator can be lonely as you're separated from all the passengers. Operating a train can also be more stressful — you're always hoping someone won't try to beat the train crossing the tracks. I love driving a bus because you're constantly in action and have directional control of the vehicle. Talking to people is the biggest benefit. Even if it's just a "Hello," that human interaction is an important part of not only work, but life.

What are your interests when you’re “Off the Clock”?

This year, I achieved the rank of fully professed Sister of Perpetual Indulgence in the Ladies of the Lake Minnesota chapter. It's an LGBTQI group that dresses in drag like nuns to educate, entertain, and raise funds for a host of issues affecting our communities, with chapters all over the world. As an Eagle Scout with two Eagle Palms, I need to be involved and give back to my community. This group replaced a void that was once filled by the Boy Scouts. That's why when I put on my habit, my name is "Sister Ea Gal Scout." I even wear my old scout uniform and sash with my sister veil. I'm pleased to have found this group that helps spread joy and stand in solidarity with others who are marginalized or oppressed.
