How did you begin your career at Metro Transit?
In 2004, I began my career at Metro Transit as a bus operator at South Garage. After working a couple garages, I decided that Nicollet was where I wanted to be. For about 7 years, I worked extra board, which means you drive different routes, at different times every day. I enjoyed this because the scheduled changed day-to-day, which allowed me to adjust my schedule to spend time with my family as needed.
What were your career goals and what steps did you take to achieve them?
I originally wanted to be a Street Supervisor. To accomplish this, I took a few steps to advance my education and bolster my work records, including Metro Transit’s Essential Leadership Program, the Safety and Security committee, and worked hard to get my attendance record in good standing. Doing this helped me apply and earn the position of Relief Instructor. After becoming an instructor, I found that I loved to teach and help people. At this point, I decided I wanted to become an Assistant Transportation Manager, a job that helps operators throughout their careers. And that’s what I am today and have been since 2015.
What advice do you have for others who want to take on more or different responsibilities?
Go as far as you can. Metro Transit has a lot to offer. Be willing seek out opportunities and you will find more than you ever thought of.
